For the last several years the cost of health care has been skyrocketing and along with it the cost of quality health insurance. Electric cooperative employees were falling victim to 30, 40 and 50 percent annual increases. Large insurance carriers were either dramatically raising rates, limiting coverage or forcing HMO plans onto groups that simply couldn't afford the type of coverage they had come to expect. ECWI realized that together we could work to gain control of our own health insurance costs, without the profit motivation of insurance companies. Electric cooperatives in Wisconsin, along with certain subsidiary businesses that are members of ECWI may be eligible to become insured under this comprehensive plan. ECWI has several plan styles for cooperatives to chose from. Before becoming eligible, electric cooperatives must meet certain standards set forth by the board of trustees.
